There are a few steps to publish your Google Site website with your custom domain name.
Step 1: Configure the Zone in your Moreweb account
- Log in to your Moreweb account and open the MENU.
- Go to DOMAIN NAMES > ACTIVE.
- Hover over your domain and click on MANAGE.
- Click EDIT DNS ZONE Under MANAGE ZONE on the left side.
- Click on NEW RECORD in the panel below and select CNAME (Canonical Name) under Type.
- Enter "www" into the Host field and "ghs.googlehosted.com." into the Canonical Name field.
Please make sure to include a dot at the end of the CNAME field. - Leave TTL and click SAVE RECORD.
- Click again on NEW RECORD.
- In the Type dropdown menu, select URL (Url Forward).
- In the Host field enter "@".
- Leave the fields Forward Type "Permanent redirect (301)" and Protocol "HTTP".
- "Forward to" enter your domain name starting with www, e.g. "www.youridea.nz".
- Click SAVE and then SAVE CHANGES.
Step 2: Setup custom domain in your Google Sites account
Follow these steps which explain how to use a custom domain for your Google Site.
- Open your Google Site and go to Settings.
- Click Custom domains.
- Select Start setup.
- Enter your domain name.
If you are asked to verify domain ownership, pause here and follow the verification instructions provided in Step 3. Once completed, return and continue the setup.
- Click Next.
- The on-screen instructions to connect your domain with your third-party domain registrar, have already been completed in step 1.
- Click Done to complete the setup.
Step 3: Verify ownership of your domain in Search Console
To connect your domain to Google Sites, you first need to verify that you own the domain using Google Search Console.
- Go to Google Search Console.
- In the left navigation menu, select Add property (or Search property if already visible).
- Click Add property.
- Choose the Domain option (not URL prefix).
- Enter your domain name, for example:
youridea.nz. - Click Continue.
- Select the verification method for Any DNS Provider.
- Copy the TXT record provided by Google Search Console.
- Add this TXT record to your domain’s ZONE File, see step 4.
- Once the TXT record has been added, return to Google Search Console and click Verify.
After verification is successful, your domain ownership will be confirmed and you can continue connecting it to your Google Site.
Step 4: Complete verification in your Moreweb account
- Log in to your Moreweb account and open the MENU.
- Go to DOMAIN NAMES > ACTIVE.
- Hover over your domain and click on MANAGE.
- Click EDIT DNS ZONE Under MANAGE ZONE on the left side.
- Click on NEW RECORD in the panel below and select TXT (Text) under Type.
- In the Host field enter "@".
- Paste the TXT record you got in your Google Search Console into the Text field.
- Leave TTL and click SAVE.
- Click SAVE CHANGES.
