What is the Sunrise period?
The Sunrise period is a protective phase exclusive to trademark holders registered with the Trademark Clearinghouse. During this period, only trademark holders can register domain names that exactly match their trademarks. This period allows them to secure their domains before registration opens to the general public. Once the Sunrise period ends, domain registration is available on a first-come, first-served basis for everyone.
How long does the Sunrise period last?
The Sunrise period lasts a minimum of 30 days but may be longer, depending on the domain extension. For example, the dotShabaka Sunrise period ended on December 29, 2013, at 23:59 UTC and was followed by the Landrush period on January 2, 2014, at 00:00 UTC.
What are the criteria to be eligible for the Sunrise period?
Eligibility is limited to trademark holders and their authorized agents. They must be registered with the Trademark Clearinghouse and provide a Signed Mark Data (SMD) file during registration.
How do I obtain a Signed Mark Data file (SMD file)?
An SMD file is required to verify your status as a trademark holder or agent. It is generated by the Trademark Clearinghouse. To obtain an SMD file, contact our Sales team to discuss the process of registering with the Trademark Clearinghouse.
For how long can I register my domain during the Sunrise period?
You can register a domain name for a duration of 1 to 10 years, depending on the rules of the registry managing the domain extension.
Is it better to submit my application at the beginning of the Sunrise period or at the end?
It depends on the type of Sunrise period. For example, dotShabaka uses an End Date Sunrise period, meaning that applications are reviewed and allocated only after the period ends. In such cases, there is no advantage to submitting your application early. Ensure your application meets all requirements before submission.
Who will review my application?
Your application will be reviewed by The Trademark Clearinghouse once the Sunrise period ends. Ensure your trademark matches the domain name and is registered in the correct language to avoid issues during the review.
When will registration be open to everyone?
The timeline for general availability varies by domain extension. Some domains may move directly to General Availability after Sunrise, while others might include additional phases like Landrush, Pioneers, or Premium.
